Studies on Water Pollution

Abstract
In view of the ever increasing water pollution problems of rivers in the vicinity of large urban communities, the author has investigated and researched polluted waters sampled from the Sooyung Chun and Dongnae Chun in the Pusan area, and the Gwangju Chun and Yongsan River in the Gwangju area, from April to November of 1971.
The water samples were taken four times during the period of study each from one of the 20 sampling points used in the two areas.
The results are as follows:
1. Generally, polluted water flows into the Pusan Bay Area without treatment.
The pollution tendency was relatively higher in the downstream flow than in the upstream flow in Sooyung Chun and in Dongnae Chun.
The highest value was measured below the Sooyung Bridge.
2. The Kwangju Chun, which pass through Kwangju City, showed the highest pollution value in this urban city area although it gradually decreased further down-stream where it runs into the Yongsan River. Because the Yongsan River, receives the water of the kwangju Chun, it has the possibility of being rapidly polluted not only form the city but also from the effuents released from the nightsoil tank constructed also downstream of the Sangmu-Dong area of the city.
3. In order to prevent further pollution of the Youngsan River and to allow this water to be used as a source of drinking water in the Naju area, protective action must be taken.
